According to Ashura News, citing the Muqabbal Thought and Culture Database, Ayatollah Bahjat (may Allah have mercy on him) eloquently describes a vital role in spiritual conduct: Choosing a companion! Companionship that can increase insight or lead the heart to cruelty.

According to the Hawza narration, Ayatollah Bahjat Quds-Sarah says:

It is clear that reading the Quran every day and making appropriate supplications at appropriate times and places, in pursuits and otherwise; and frequenting the mosques, visiting the venerable scholars and saints, and spending time with them are among the pleasures of God and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), and you should be careful every day to increase your insight and familiarity with worship, recitation, and pilgrimage.

On the contrary, frequent gatherings with the heedless increase the hardness and darkness of the heart and the aversion to worship and pilgrimage. This is because the good states resulting from worship, pilgrimage and recitations are transformed into bad states and deficiencies due to gatherings with weak faith.

Therefore, sitting with those who are weak in faith – except in a state of necessity and for other than their guidance – causes one to lose his good qualities and instead learn their corrupt (unpleasant) morals:

“Sit with those whose presence reminds you of Allah, whose speech increases your knowledge, and whose deeds make you desire the Hereafter.” (Taken from the saying of Imam Sadiq (a.s.), Usul al-Kafi, vol. 1, p. 39).
