Sheikh Naim Qassem: From the founding of the "Movement of the Disadvantaged" to the Secretary General of Hezbollah in Lebanon

Sheikh Naim Qassem is the fourth Secretary General of Hezbollah, who was appointed as the new Secretary General of the movement after the martyrdom of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah; he has a long history of struggle in the Amal and Hezbollah movements in Lebanon.

According to Ashura News, quoted by Mehr News Agency, "Sheikh Naeem Qassem", Secretary General of Hezbollah, is a Shiite religious scholar and Lebanese politician who is considered one of the most famous leaders of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement. He was elected as the fourth Secretary General of the movement on October 29, 2024 (8 Aban 1403) after the assassination of the martyr "Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah", the former Secretary General of Hezbollah. He was previously the Deputy Secretary General of Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Naeem Qassem has a bachelor's and master's degree in chemistry and has been active in Islamic groups since the seventies of the twentieth century and was with "Imam Musa Sadr" from the beginning of the establishment of the "Movement of the Disadvantaged". Then he participated in the establishment of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement and was elected as the Deputy Secretary General of this movement in 1991.

Birth and personal life

Sheikh Naeem Qassem was born in the "Al-Basta Al-Tahta" area in Beirut in 1953. His mother was from Kafr Fila, a district of the Tuffah region in southern Lebanon. He is married and has 6 children, including 4 sons and 2 daughters.

University and seminary education

Sheikh Naim Qassem entered the Faculty of Education of the Lebanese University in 1970 and studied chemistry in French. After graduating, he taught chemistry in Lebanese high schools for 6 years; after that, he obtained his master's degree in chemistry from the same university in 1977.

During his university days, Sheikh Naim Qassem held classes for children in the mosque when he was only 18 years old. At the same time, he continued his studies and seminary education.

He studied his seminary studies under the guidance of great Lebanese Shiite scholars such as Abbas Mousavi, Hassan Tarad and Ali Amin, and took external courses in jurisprudence and principles under the tutelage of the late Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah.

Political activities

During his student days, Sheikh Naim Qassem participated in the establishment of the "Muslim Students Union" in Lebanon and headed the Religious and Islamic Education Society from 1974 to 1988.

After the formation of the "Amal" movement as the military branch of the Lebanese Disadvantaged Movement by Imam Musa Sadr in 1974, he joined this movement and became the successor to the cultural officer in this movement.

He then became the secretary of the Amal Movement's Command Council and was elected as the ideological and cultural representative during Hussein Husseini's tenure. After the Islamic Revolution of Iran, Sheikh Naeem Qassem withdrew from the Amal Movement and completed his seminary studies, pursuing his religious activities by holding classes in mosques and Hussainiyya in Beirut and the southern suburbs of Lebanon. He devoted himself to this work for more than 10 years and held religious classes in numerous mosques and Hussainiyya.

Naeem Qassem continued his weekly meetings for 10 years at the "Ber and Ershad" Mosque, and then moved to the Imam Mahdi Mosque and stayed there for 4 years, and during these moves between mosques and Hussainiyya during these years, he did not stay in any one for more than 3 to 5 years. Naeem Qassem participated in the establishment of the Islamic Religious Education Society in 1977 and managed this group until 1990.

Then, influenced by the Islamic Revolution of Iran led by Imam Khomeini (RA), he returned to political activity and participated in Islamic committees and engaged in media activities for the revolution. Hezbollah was founded in 1982, and Naim Qassem was one of the most prominent activists of the movement at the time of its founding. Sheikh Naim Qassem was one of the prominent elements in the process of founding Hezbollah in Lebanon in 1982 and was elected as a member of the Hezbollah Council and served on this Council for 3 terms. He was then given responsibility for educational and scouting activities in Beirut.

He went on to become the deputy chairman of Hezbollah's Executive Council and then chairman of this Council. Finally, in 1991, he was elected as the deputy secretary general of Hezbollah. One of his responsibilities was to follow up on the activities of Hezbollah's parliamentary representatives and their political activities.

He was also responsible for the general coordination of Hezbollah's parliamentary elections in 1992, coinciding with the start of the first parliamentary elections.

Sheikh Naim Qassem's long tenure as Deputy Secretary General of Hezbollah was accompanied by many developments, including the July 1993 War, the 1996 War, the Liberation of Lebanon in 2000, the 33-Day War in 2006, and the conflicts of 2017, during which Hezbollah's military power increased exponentially.
